{"id":1821,"date":"2020-09-08T13:03:02","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T11:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=366574"},"modified":"2020-09-08T13:03:02","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T11:03:02","slug":"eskoms-future-is-renewable-energy-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interwebdev.co.za\/index.php\/2020\/09\/08\/eskoms-future-is-renewable-energy-ceo\/","title":{"rendered":"Eskom\u2019s future is renewable energy \u2013 CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Andre-de-Ruyter.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbcafrica.com\/videos\/2020\/09\/04\/eskom-ceo-on-the-power-utilitys-latest-round-of-load-shedding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>told CNBC Africa<\/strong><\/a> the company is transitioning to new energy sources like solar and wind power.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom has come under fire for flouting environmental laws with the pollution from its ageing coal-powered stations.<\/p>\n<p>De Ruyter said it will cost Eskom R60 billion over the next decade to make its power fleet environmentally complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is money which we frankly just don\u2019t have,\u201d De Ruyter said.<\/p>\n<p>He recognised that Eskom cannot continue to violate environmental laws, which provides them with an opportunity to move to cleaner energy.<\/p>\n<p>This change requires certain regulatory approvals, and Eskom is engaging with the government about these changes.<\/p>\n<p>The Eskom CEO added that the challenges at the company also provides it with an opportunity to attract investments.<\/p>\n<p>He said private investors have expressed interest in supporting South Africa\u2019s move to renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Organisations like the World Bank, European Investment Bank, and others are keen to support and accelerated rollout of decarbonized, low-carbon, and no-carbon electricity generation.<\/p>\n<h3>Building renewable energy capacity<\/h3>\n<p>De Ruyter said the speed at which renewable energy capacity will be added will depend on political and economic will.<\/p>\n<p>He said countries like China, India, and the United States add between 30,000MW and 50,000MW of renewable energy to their grids per year.<\/p>\n<p>This demonstrates that the global supply of renewable energy components is available and the capacity is there to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>He said while it will take time to replace Eskom\u2019s coal-powered stations, it is possible to bring renewable energy online at scale within three to five years.<\/p>\n<p>De Ruyter added that the latest solar power generation costs are much lower than using coal-powered stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenewable energy can be competitive with conventional coal-fired power generation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>The only way to stop load-shedding<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/366078-there-is-only-one-way-to-stop-load-shedding-in-south-africa-analyst.html\"><strong>Chris Yelland recently said<\/strong><\/a> the only way to stop load-shedding is to replace poor-performing coal-fired power stations with reliable and low-cost wind, solar PV, battery storage, and gas-to-power generation.<\/p>\n<p>Yelland said what the country needs is 6,000MW of new generation capacity in the next two to three years.<\/p>\n<p>He said unless South Africa launches courageous and bold decision policy initiatives, load-shedding is here to stay.<\/p>\n<p>He said these policy initiatives must be aimed at replacing the old and poor performing coal-fired power stations with new generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>This new generation capacity should come from low-cost and reliable wind, solar PV, battery storage, and gas-to-power.<\/p>\n<p>Yelland added that this new capacity procurement will not come from Eskom, which is why legislative and policy changes are needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the only solution going forward and the policymakers must get this message loud and clear,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is time to stop pussyfooting about this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Energy policy and investment specialist Anton Eberhard concurred with Yelland, saying alternatives to Eskom are needed to build capacity.<\/p>\n<p>He said because of Eskom\u2019s unsustainable debt levels it has no possibility of raising new finance for new generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why we need to see alternatives.
